The Recce MTB Mission and MTB Jammie events start and finish at the Fort Highland Recce Base on the edge of the Eastern Escarpment near Dullstroom in Mpumalanga.
The Jammie events are MTB support events on the Recce MTB Mission routes. ‘Jammie’ is the terminology used for Special Forces support personnel that are not directly involved in a mission.
|MTB Mission||220 km||4000 m|
|Noon Jammie||~70 km||1200 m|
|Moon Jammie||~135 km||2700 m|
|Jammie Relay||~70/65/60 km||1200/1500/1300 m|
Mountain bikers can participate in the Recce MTB Mission in three categories:
- ‘Heavy’ or solo
- ‘Small Team’ of 2 mountain bikers
- ‘Assault Team’ of 3 or 4 mountain bikers
Mountain bikers can participate in the Moon Jammie and Noon Jammie events in solo format only, or as a relay team in the Jammie MTB Relay event.
|MTB Mission||Mountain bikers will cover more than 200 km on tar, district, railway service, forest and farm roads, as well as Jeep track and single track.
The total elevation gain is approximately 4000 meters with the minimum altitude at 1200 meters ASL and the highest point at 2332 meters ASL. The route comprises three legs with similar distances and elevation gain.
The MTB Mission route has several cut-offs along the route. To complete the Recce MTB Mission, mountain bikers need to –
– Complete the physically and mentally tough Recce MTB Mission within the allocated time of 22 hours
– Pass through several checkpoints (called CPs) along the routes
– Pass a number of strategic targets along the routes
MTB riders who do not make any of the time cut-offs have failed the mission. These MTB riders can continue as Jammies, or they will be extracted and Returned-to-Unit (RTU).
|MTB Relay Jammie||Mountain bikers will complete ~90% of the Recce MTB Mission route in a relay team format with each member doing one leg of 200 km.
The MTB Relay Jammie route has two cut-offs along the route and mountain bikers have 22 hours to complete the relay.
|MTB Moon Jammie||Mountain bikers will complete the 1st two legs of the Recce MTB Mission route in solo format with each rider doing ~135 km.
MTB Moon Jammies have two time cut-offs and at least a section would be done in the dark.
|MTB Noon Jammie||Mountain bikers will complete the 1st leg of the Recce MTB Mission route in solo format with each rider doing ~70 km.
MTB Noon Jammies have one time cut-off and most riders should complete this leg during daytime.
